This week, I wanted to shed some light on a very popular discussion at the moment: the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creative arts, particularly music production. AI is everywhere these days, including in the music industry.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to compose and create music using new technological methods. There is significant concern that this could lead to a loss of human touch and emotional depth in music. Authenticity and personal expression are essential to what resonates with an audience, and these elements could easily be lost when music is created by algorithms rather than human creativity. If AI takes over the composition process,
music may lose its ability to express emotions and tell stories. There is also a risk of homogenisation, as AI tends to rely on patterns and trends, potentially resulting in a generic sound that stifles innovation and musical diversity. This could make it harder for individual and unconventional artists to stand out, as AI-generated music may prioritise commercial viability over artistic integrity. Another ethical concern is related to the ownership and originality of music created by AI.
Matters concerning intellectual property and the value of human creativity become more complex as machine involvement in music creation grows.
On a more positive note, technology has brought significant advantages to music production. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and virtual instruments have made music creation more accessible, democratising the field more than ever before.
It is critical to strike a balance: embracing technological progress while preserving the human elements that make music special. As we navigate this ever-evolving landscape, it is crucial to lead the discussion on the role of AI in music and how technology can enhance, rather than detract from, this beloved form of art.
Would love to hear about your thoughts and concerns on the
subject! Reply back with your feedback.
